About

Police Officer Christopher Backus is an experienced Washington law enforcement professional whose career has included municipal policing, corrections, reserve police service, and county detention. Originally from Olympia, Washington, Backus has developed a professional philosophy emphasizing training, preparation, community engagement, and giving his full effort to his responsibilities.

Sports were an important part of Backus’s early life. He played baseball and football while growing up and continues to stay active through softball and regular workouts. After graduating from Capital High School in 2006, Backus attended South Puget Sound Community College, earning an associate degree. He continued his education at Saint Martin’s University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology. His academic performance earned him recognition on the honor roll as well as partial academic scholarships during his higher education.

Backus’s law enforcement career has provided experience in several different public-safety environments. His professional background includes working as a corrections officer with the Washington State Department of Corrections, a reserve police officer with the Shelton Police Department, and a jailer with the Mason County Jail. He has also served as a police officer with the Tukwila Police Department, Tenino Police Department, and Grand Coulee Police Department.

One of Backus’s strongest professional interests is law enforcement training. He considers ongoing training an important component of professional development and believes officers should continually work to strengthen their knowledge, skills, and preparation throughout their careers.

Community engagement is another area Backus considers particularly important. He believes constructive interaction between law enforcement and the communities they serve can be especially valuable when working with juveniles and creating opportunities for positive connections.

Away from work, Backus enjoys softball, working out, camping, hiking, and fly fishing in Montana. His approach to both his career and personal life emphasizes effort, preparation, and making time for what matters most.
